Congregation Or Hadash in Altanta is building out a new home from an existing car repair shop. In leiu of an Power Wise Energy Audit, the congregation requested a sustainability review from GIPL for their new building.
GIPL authorized its auditor to advise the congregation during a “brainstorming” session to identify items that would increase the sustainable features of their new building. The meeting was held in April 2011. The review identified a variety of lighting, HVAC, roofing, insulation and plumbing improvements that were available to the congregation.
In November 2011, Congregation Or Hadash applied for and received an Energy Improvement Matching Grant of $12,500 for roof insulation and 8 HVAC unit upgrades to SEER 15. Estimated annual energy savings from these upgrades is approximately $3,048.
The congregation will use the new building as a learning lesson for its members by detailing why they took the measures they did to improve energy efficiency. Their Green Committee oversees the environmental impact of their congregation and its facilities. The committee submitted a revised mission statement to include creation care. The committee is also introducing education sessions on the connection of Judaism and caring for the environment.
The congregation was one of fourteen faith communities that
were awarded a total of $81,816 in Energy Improvement
Matching Grants in November 2011. The next round of Matching Grants
applications are due on November 15, 2012.
