Celebrating National Bike Month
6/6/2012
by gipl
GIPL's Bike for Breakfast event marked the end of National Bike Month in May. We partnered with several members of the local community to make this event happen.
Decatur has a thriving cycling community, and we were happy to offer hospitality to the many cyclists that commute to work. They were pleasantly surprised to see an event catering to their community.
In total, the cyclists at the breakfast logged 164.7 miles on the day of our event!
Andrew Lane, our super hero earth saver from St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church in Athens, traveled from Athens to attend our event. He’s also the winner of both categories in our Bike Month Challenge. He commuted a total of 285 miles in May, and commuted via bicycle on 22 days throughout the month. He’s setting a great example for all of us as he demonstrates what’s possible on two wheels.

No matter how long your commute, one less car on
the road makes a difference.

Our surprise winner in our Staff Challenge was our new intern Susan, with seven days biking to work. She surpassed our commutes in the two weeks she was in the office this month because she bikes to work every single day.
I (Alison) ended up biking five times in May. It may not seem like a lot, but it’s a significant change for someone who’s been driving alone to work every day for two years.
And now when I get in my car, I actually wonder what the fresh air would feel like if I were on my bike that day. For me, this is progress.
Even better, I’m now earning $3 a day for biking to work from the Clean Air Campaign. If you’re switching to a clean commute (cycling, walking, carpooling, condensed work week, etc.), sign up for this program to earn easy money.
We hope you were all inspired this month to get out and ride. See you on the streets!
