Confused about Climate Change?

For those of you engaged in creation care and action on behalf of our planet Earth, there is no doubt you have wondered how to respond to those who question the science or politics of 'global warming'. The debate-framed as one between "climate alarmists" and "global warming skeptics" or "deniers"-is admittedly confusing. There is an excess of contradictory information bombarding us from every side. Although global climate change is not the only issue that GIPL works to address, it is the key motivation for our initiatives to help faith communities use less energy. As you, likewise, take the message that faithful people are called to care for the earth into your community; we want to help you understand the debate and know how to redirect the energy it ignites.

Whether or not we can be sure of what exact effects global climate change will have, we at GIPL think it is important not to get caught up in the debate to the extent that it detracts from the good work you are doing. Rather, help your community and those on both "sides" understand that regardless of our differences, we should all agree that caring for the earth is a matter of being faithful.

We are providing the following links to help you understand some of the issues and we will be adding to them from time to time. Please feel free to call or e-mail us for more information as well.

Real Climate - This site features articles and entries by climate scientists on all sorts of topics related to global warming. It is a great clearinghouse of information and you can find many of your questions answered here.

Intelligence Squared Debate - This article by GIPL's own Bill Witherspoon reviews a debate on NPR's Intelligence Squared about whether or not global warming is a crisis. After the debate, more people in the audience agreed with those who said it was not a crisis than before the debate. Bill examines the issues and the tactics of both sides. You can hear the whole debate here.

The Truth About Denial - This article from Newsweek examines some of the arguments against global warming as well as those making them.

Death by Degrees - Put out by Physicians for Social Responsibility, this resource details the health effects of climate change. It is specifically geared toward Georgia.
